The road around Lake Wakatipu to GlenorchyWith the 45-minute drive from Queenstown, on what has been rated as one of the most scenic highways in the world, stands, across the lake from Kinloch, the small, reserved town of Glenorchy.

The first thing that you will notice about Glenorchy is the eye-catching scenery that surrounds the entire town.

History

In the beginning, Glenorchy was a ‘summer camp’ for Maori who travelled from the West Coast in order to collect greenstone from the Dart River.

In the 1860’s, Glenorchy was home to European settlers, whom of which grazed sheep in the area, milled timber and created scheelite mining industries.

Prior to the road which links Queenstown to Glenorchy being recently sealed, the only way to get from one location to another was by boat
