Arrowtown

ArrowtownJust 20 minutes, (18km), from Queenstown lies a small town by the name of Arrowtown, with a population of 1689.

As the town is situated between the Remarkables and Coronet Peak, visitors who would rather relax in a quiet historic part of the South Island would find Arrowtown the ideal holiday spot.

With the picturesque surroundings, Arrowtown provides historic attractions with many of original shops and cottages still in use and viewable to the public.

Arrowtown History

ArrowtownIt was not only Queenstown who had the discovery of gold in 1862, but also Arrowtown.

The discovery was made by Jack Tewa, (commonly known as Maori Jack), in the Arrow River.

It was only a matter of weeks before thousands of miners from all around the globe invaded the town, seeing a dramatic increase in the towns population which grew to over 7,000.

During this period, Arrowtown pioneers constructed small cottages, churches and planted avenues of trees, many of which can still be seen today.
